Heating and powering local communities in Italy with CHP and biomass

Fernheizwerk Toblach-Innichen in South Tyrol, Italy, operates a biomass plant in which wood chips, bark, and sawdust are fed to a combustion boiler to produce thermal energy. CWC member Turboden connected an ORC unit to the boiler.

The thermal energy from the biomass burned in the combustion boiler is exploited to generate electricity. The exhaust heat released after the process is used to supply two local communities (Toblach/Dobbiaco and Innichen/San Candido) with district heating. This plant is the first ORC-based biomass plant in South Tyrol.
